Number of visitors broke the record of open- air cinema Bacvice.
Split, May 27th - the first Mediterranean Film Festival Split was officially opened in open-air cinema with The Edge of heaven, directed by Fatih Akin, winner of the best screenplay award last year in Cannes. Film by this famous German-Turkish director deals with the relationship between East and West. It is a complex story about lives intertwined.
Crowd in front of the open-air cinema Bacvice hasn't been seen in years and shows that Split has a movie audience and potential; Mediterranean Film Festival will certainly become one of Split's attractions. More than 500 people broke the cinema’s record, extra chairs had to be provided and even that wasn’t enough. Festival director Alen Munitić and producer Tanja Prpić Marenić were extremely satisfied and said they were hoping the rest of the festival will be as attended as it was on the opening night. The idea for the festival was born two years ago and last night was a great acknowledgment to see it realized. Director and producer also thanked the City of Split and the sponsors for their support.
Festival started in the morning in Zlatna Vrata cinema with the projection of The Edge of Heaven. The first films from the retrospective program, made by Tanja Vrvilo, were shown in the afternoon. The selected films are the works of cult directors from 1960s onwards. These movies are borderline of film art and their genres range from documentary essays and political films to experiments that deal with the issue of film itself and the nature of the film image. Even though they use different approaches they all have one thing in common and that is the Mediterranean culture.
The first film shown in the restrospective was All or Nothing by the famous Split director Ivan Martinec, member of KinoKlub Split and independent author well known for his experimental work House of Sand – the only Croatian full-length feature film in that genre. The short film All or Nothing that could be seen today made a pattern for his later works, and the legendary 1968, the year when the film was made, proved to be more than just an insignificant coincidence.
Next on the schedule was Mediterranean by Jean-Daniel Pollet, one of the most important, but somewhat forgotten New Wave authors. The film follows Pollet and his friend, Volkera Schloendorf, famous German director, on a 35000km long journey. Through an innovative visual approach they search for the mythical roots of the Mediterranean inspired by the works of Phillipe Sollers.
In spite of somewhat more alternative retrospective program and summer heat, the cinema was almost full which promised success even before the official opening.
After the films, music took over with Arsen Dedic in the Aquarium on Bacvice. It was a performance to remember. After that Party Tanja and Super Mario, duo La musique fantastique, took the stage and threw a memorable party, ending the first day of the Mediterranean Film festival and making it a part of Croatian cultural life.
We can say the audience got hooked on the festival!
Wednesday- Full Speed Ahead!
Mediterranean Film Festival continues full speed ahead. Tonight's main projection in open-air cinema Bacvice at 21h will be announced by Vinko Brešan himself with his new film Will Not Stop There. This Croatian hit-maker brings us a black comedy about a Croatian war veteran and a Serbian prostitute which will win the heart of the audience. Will Not Stop There is out-of competition while the other two films in today's program will try to win votes of festival's jury.
French-Algerian film Yellow House is at 16h in Zlatna Vrata cinema. Amor Hakkar, famous French director of Algerian parentage brings us a story about a family that deals with a death of one of its members. Through this film he tells his own story; his past and identity split between his two countries.
The second film in the competition is a French film The Secret of the Grain (23h in open-air cinema Bacvice). The film won 4 Cesar awards, including the ones for best film, director and screenplay. Abdelattif Kechiche triumphed with his last two films as well which tells us we have a masterpiece on our hands. This bittersweet business adventure of a large Tunisian family in France (like the director) will delight you. The film also won the FIPRESCI award on Mostra in Venice.
At 16h in the retrospective we have Arrebato (1979.) by Ivan Zulueta. This psychedelic, erotic, fantasy, horror film is a story about a film director and his unusual friend and is Zulueta’s auto referential questioning of self as a director and the film as a media. But in a less serious way than it sounds.
This Wednesday’s party is a continuance of weirdness of Arrebato. „The shkovatzze party“, with a special treat- Dalmatia in my Melodeye- Karaoke! will take place in the Aquarium
